Little Middle Folk School

June 14-20, 2026

Every summer, the Folk School opens its doors to young folks age 7–17 for Little Middle Folk School, an opportunity for youths to discover Appalachian culture and to take part in hands-on programs in dozens of arts and crafts.

Participants are divided into two groups. “Littles” are rising second-graders to rising sixth-graders, and “Middles” are rising seventh-graders to rising 12th graders.

Be sure to register early, as spots are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Class offerings will be available soon.

Little Middle class registration will open March 10, 2026.

  • To qualify for Little, your child must be a minimum age of 7 years old AND a rising 2nd grader
  • To qualify for Middle, your child must be a minimum age of 12 years old AND a rising 7th grader
  • Little Middle classes will take place Monday-Friday (9 a.m.-3 p.m.)
  • Commuting students are required to bring a sack lunch. Lunch is provided only for students staying on campus.
  • Morning song and announcements begin at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, June 15. Class starts at 9:05 a.m. and ends at 3 p.m. Drop-off and pick-up will be in the Festival Barn for all students. Local students must be picked up by 4:30 p.m. at the latest. No aftercare program is available.
  • Confirmation of registration, a materials list, and a class schedule will be emailed after registration.
  • Little/Middle Cancellation Policy: The balance is due and no refunds will be made after May 18, 2026. If a student must be removed from the program due to a discipline problem, no refund will be given.

Books, Boxes & More ~ Instructor Ida Palmer-Ball
Decorate your own beautiful papers and turn them into cool, handmade books and boxes!

Corn Husk Creations ~ Instructor Mary Rutherford
Use your imagination to turn colorful corn shucks into a-MAIZE-ing characters. Anna, Elsa, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Blackbeard, Darth Vader, Snow White or even Baby Yoda are just a few of the possibilities! Have creative fun with this traditional craft.

Fun with Baskets ~ Instructor Pattie Bagley
Let’s make some baskets! Create 3 or 4 baskets with all different colors. Make some with wooden bases and somewhere you’ll weave the base together. It’s lots of fun for everyone.

Gourd Fairy Houses ~ Instructor Linda Vanderlaan
Explore a fantasy world as you use a gourd to create a house for a fairy, hobbit, or gnome. Plan and decorate the inside and outside of your tiny home, and build tables, chairs and pathways.

Hula Hoops & More ~ Instructor Sherry Hunter-Kaskie
Make and decorate a unique hula-hoop of your own. Have fun creating your own game of bingo and add your personal touch by embellishing the box to store it in.

Knitting Ninjas ~ Instructor Emolyn Liden
Explore the wondrous world of fiber art. Learn to knit with your hands and on knitting needles to create chains, necklaces, headbands, and maybe a flower. Use all kinds of yarn, fiber, buttons, and more to finish your projects.

Let’s Move! Dance to the Music ~ Instructor Meg Dedoph
Learn how to dance in several traditional folk dance genres. From Virginia Reel and English Morris dance to French Bal Folk dances and songs, we’ll explore a variety of music and dance together with lots of laughter and smiles all around!

Make a Birdhouse to Attract Feathered Friends ~ Instructor Dave Kaspar
Assemble a bird feeder using hand tools and decorate using paint, sticks, grasses, and other materials for a natural finish. Your finished bird feeder will be complete with hanging hardware or post and instructions for locating and mounting when you return home.

Marvelous Mosaics ~ Instructor Jeannette Brossart
Mosaics are an ancient art form in which small pieces are put together to make new patterns and pictures. Create multiple marvelous mosaics that will build your skills and allow for lots of creative inspiration.

Movement for Learning Art Skills & Styles ~ Instructor Lynda Best
Learn two or three quick movements to focus, center, and integrate. Then learn a new element of art each day (line, color, shape, texture, light, and space) and how to paint in your own style.

Nature Explorers ~ Instructor Catherine Bratton
Build forts and make friends with plants in the woods around us! We will camouflage ourselves and learn to move like animals while learning about our neighbors in the forest.

Needle-felt Animals, Gnomes, & Mushrooms ~ Instructor Dedra Davis – Learn basic felting techniques to design and create these fantastic sculptural pieces using colorful wool and felting needles.

Paper Bag Marionettes ~ Instructor Julia Weatherford
Each participant will design, construct, and detail a functional marionette using recycled paper materials, with the option of participating in a folk song performance.

Singing–Let Your Voice Shine! ~ Instructor Nicole Keim
Find your musical voice and have fun at the same time! Join our friendly song circle and learn a variety of music from around the world. You’ll even move while singing with fun and easy play party singing games.

Stitched Stories & Funky Crafts ~ Instructor Willa Brigham
Combine art and storytelling to create an original story or rewrite one that speaks to you. Let your ideas run wild. Tell your story with both words and art using felt, paper, and fabric with accents of buttons and beads.

Wild Wooly Wet Felt Making ~ Instructor Katrina Stone
Ready for some good clean fun? Transform sheep wool into felt with soap, water and your hands and feet! Make flowers, acorns and critters, such as snakes, bugs, and birds! Also, learn how to “paint” with wool to make pictures.

Baking is Science! ~ Instructor Krisa Margies
Wonder why some cookies are crispy and sugary while others are moist and chewy? Come learn the fascinating science behind some of your favorite sweet treats, including cookies, cinnamon rolls and ice cream.

Basket Weaving ~ Instructor Bev Larson
Have fun learning to weave a basket! Enjoy making a traditional (or nontraditional) market basket. Various handle sizes and colors will be available. Add your own creative twist to this traditional style.

Book Arts ~ Minuette Floyd
Construct your own handmade books using a variety of folding, stitching, and page design techniques. Old, discarded books will be repurposed to create sketchbooks. Also, enjoy making accordion, pamphlet, and Coptic stitch books.

Carve a Brasstown Pattern ~ Instructor Richard Carter
Get an introduction to the carving patterns created by the Brasstown Carvers over generations. From figures depicting farm and country life to the iconic Nativity scene, these patterns are recognized as part of a long tradition of woodcarving in the Brasstown Valley and represent a significant contribution to Folk School craft history. Students will work at their own pace and may complete more than one pattern.

Ceramic Arts Exploration ~ Instructor Cristen Clonts
Dive into the world of clay and discover the satisfying art of ceramics! Learn fundamental techniques including pinch pots, coil building, and basic wheel throwing. Explore different clay types, glazing basics, and firing processes. Build confidence with clay through experimentation and personal expression.

Design, Fire, Admire ~ Instructor Lynn Ann Miller
Learn the basics of kiln fired enamels. Apply vibrant colors of powdered glass to copper. Create a treasured gift for yourself or to share.

Drawing Stories–Intro to Making Comics ~ Instructor Thomas Begley
Explore the wild world of words and pictures! Hone your skills as an artist and observer with drawing games and storytelling exercises. Take home your very own comic page and a new art journaling practice!

Fire & Forging ~ Instructor Abel Allen
Learn the FUNdamentals of shaping hot metal through a variety of projects that are not only beautiful, but useful too. Building fires, using tools, and an understanding of the science behind smithing, will guide us in an exploration of the basic principles behind every great piece of art that’s crafted from steel.

Fun & Funky Quilts ~ Instructor Nancy Hinds
Stitch together fabrics to make a quilt with a funky twist. Choose from the fabrics provided or bring your own in prints and colors you love. End the week with your very own quilt.

FUNdamentals of Jewelry Making ~ Instructor Kristen Wilder
Explore the world of jewelry design and let your creativity shine! Make a variety of pieces with different metals while learning the fundamentals of jewelry fabrication. Build your design and making skills using techniques such as soldering, hammering, forming, texturing, and stone setting. Every project is an opportunity to get creative and make something amazing.

Heritage Dances ~Instructor Anna Claire Camp
If you can walk, you can dance! In our friendly class we will explore many dances from all over the world — from squares, to contras, play party singing games, English country, circle mixers, and more. Quickly and easily learn all the moves you need to join in the dance and have fun!

Love Takes Shape: A Bandsaw Box Journey ~Instructor Scarlette Rouse
Learn about the bandsaw and how to safely cut out lovely bandsaw boxes. Bandsaw boxes can be any shape or size; your imagination is all it takes to make a one of a kind box! Not only will you make a box or two, you will also paint them to give them all the character you can imagine.

Ukulele for All! ~ Instructor Aaron Keim
The ukulele is a happy little instrument, and this class is all about having fun. Let’s sing and play together on the ukulele. Learn tuning, simple strumming patterns, and enough chords to play songs. No experience is needed. Bring your own ukulele or arrange to borrow an instrument from the Folk School. At the end of the week, you’ll know chords, rhythms, and how to play with others.

Teen Weavers ~ Instructor Colleen Casey
Play with dozens of beautifully colored and textured yarns, then watch patterns magically appear while you weave. Learn how to thread a loom and weave projects you will treasure for years to come.

Woodturning–Wonderful Wood ~ Instructor Steve Cook
Turn a piece of wood into your very own special creation. Learn how to make a variety of fun projects that you can finish and decorate in your own style. Make some gifts for your friends or family, and some fun things for yourself.

Little Middle Folk School will take place from June 14-20, 2026

Little Middle will take place from Sunday, June 14 through Saturday, June 20 in 2026. Registration will be available via Configio, our online class registration system. Be sure to register early, as these spots are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Space is limited and we usually reach capacity with a waitlist.

Volunteer for Little Middle
Apply as a volunteer and help assist our instructors in delivering this special experience to kids.

Enjoy the Folk School
Bring your unfinished craft projects and gather with new friends to share ideas. Nestle in a rocking chair and read a book. Explore nature trails and our historic campus. There are many ways to relax and rejuvenate in these mountain surroundings.

Explore workshops at Olive’s Porch

In town for Little Middle? Visit downtown Murphy and check out a new Folk School experience, Olive’s Porch. The location at 27 Peachtree Street features classroom space, a retail shop showcasing the work of Appalachian artists, and a studio space dedicated to the Artist in Residence program. Named after the school’s co-founder Olive Dame Campbell, Olive’s Porch features short workshops focused on traditional Appalachian crafts, music, dance, and community topics designed for locals and visitors. We also host a variety of discussions, demonstrations, artist markets and other community events.

Socks and Sweaters: Expand Your Knitting Horizons with Margaret Radcliffe

The Folk School recently completed Little Folk School and Middle Folk School–“Little Middle” or “L/M” as it looms on our planning calendars.  There were 284 students: 156 Little (age 7-12) and 128 Middle (age 13-17), mostly locals, in 26 classes with 30 amazing teachers and a 37-member volunteer crew.
