Local Resident Discount Program

25% off Tuition for Local Residents 

For classes scheduled July 2022 and beyond, the Folk School is offering 25% off tuition and a guaranteed spot upon registration to people living in the following neighboring counties: North Carolina: Cherokee, Clay, Macon, Swain, and Graham. Georgia: Fannin, Towns, and Union. Tennessee: Polk. 

Those looking to receive this benefit are required to present one of the following, showing proof of local address including city and state: a valid driver’s license, voter registration card, tax bill, or utility bill.

Teacher & Young Adult Discount Program

15% off Tuition for Teachers and Young Adults 

For classes scheduled July 2022 and beyond, the Folk School is offering 15% off tuition and a guaranteed spot upon registration for Teachers and Young Adults (ages 18-25). 

Teachers must present proof of current certification and employment as a teacher working in a school or school setting. Young Adults are required to submit a valid driver’s license or government-issued identification showing proof of age. 

How to Apply

NOTICE: Discounts must be declared at the time of registration and cannot be applied for someone who is already enrolled in a class.

Step 1

Visit Configio and Create Account

Configio is our new online registration system for all Folk School classes. Visit the registration portal and register for an account using your email address. You will receive a confirmation email once your account has been created.

Step 2

Fill Out Application

Click “Discount Programs Application” in the top navigation menu to apply. The application is simple and easy. Registering once means your discount automatically applies each time you register for a class.

Step 3

Upload Verification

Upload a photo or a scan of your qualifications for local, youth, or teacher tuition to Configio’s applicant portal. Check the guidelines above for document specifications. Once you’ve uploaded the file, click “Complete Application.”

Step 4

Process Order and Checkout

Once completed, proceed to Checkout. Your application is not submitted until your order has been processed and you have received a confirmation email with a receipt. Once you’ve submitted your application, our Registration Department will review your verification and approve it as soon as possible. *Approval email will be sent within 48hrs.

Step 5

Begin Class Registration Process

Once approved, you can begin registering for classes with a membership discount! Your new rate will be automatically applied at checkout. *Please note: Registrations made prior to approval are NOT eligible for discounted tuition. Please wait to register until you’ve received confirmation from our Registration Department.

Olive’s Porch

Olive’s Porch is a Folk School experience in downtown Murphy, North Carolina. The location at 27 Peachtree Street features classroom space, a retail shop showcasing the work of Appalachian artists, and a studio space dedicated to the Artist in Residence program. Named after the school’s co-founder Olive Dame Campbell, Olive’s Porch features short workshops focused on traditional Appalachian crafts, music, dance, and community topics designed for locals and visitors. We also host a variety of discussions, demonstrations, artist markets and other community events.
