JCCFS: Tell us a little bit about yourself and your background. How did you get started?

JF: I’ve been playing mountain dulcimer for more than 45 years, in addition to clawhammer banjo. I also have a real passion for teaching people how to play…not just playing a tune, but putting some of your feeling and emotion into what you play. I also focus very much on listening while you play…not just reading tab! Over the years, I have found that approach to be very helpful for students I’ve had all over the United Stated and England. My goal will be to get you to feel the music in you and how to share it with others!

JCCFS: Tell us more about your class’s specific technique or process.

JF: As mentioned above, I believe too many instructors just rely on handing out Tab and have students play that. My approach will be to build and reinforce you basic techniques so you get clear smooth notes. I will give you exercises for you to practice and build your muscle memory. If you are more experienced, we will also cover how to put variation in the tunes you play…not just have one way to play them! So, the end result is that we will work on your ears, your eyes, and heart to enhance your playing! My classes usually fill up quickly in areas where I am kown. It’s been a while since I’ve been at the Folk School, so I am excited to be back there with you again!

JCCFS: What can students expect to leave your class with?

JF: My goal is for you to leave the class with a better understanding of the technical aspects of playing the mountain dulcimer, and more confidence and skills to put your own feelings into your music!

JCCFS: What is your favorite aspect or part of the Folk School? What do you most look forward to when coming back to teach on our campus?

JF: The friendliness and caring at the Folk School is a great environment for learning and growing. And the time to learn and improve your craft is exceptional. You’ll leave with a better knowledge of how to improve your playing and and the calmness and joy of sharing music!

JCCFS: Where do you draw inspiration from for your work?

JF: My inspiration comes from performers and teachers in the past who have not only helped my skills, but have also touched my heart and taught me the treasure of personal expression.

JCCFS: Anything else we should know about  you or your class?

JF: Many people think of the mountain dulcimer as a simple instrument that is easy to learn. It can be…but it can be so much more! I played clawhammer banjo for a number of years before I knew what a mountain dulcimer was! And my banjo playing influenced my dulcimer playing somewhat (rhythms, listening to tunes, etc.). But as I got more interested in the mountain dulcimer and found that it can be a GREAT instrument for expression and variation, I noticed that the dulcimer started to influence my banjo playing too!! But the most important thing…enjoy the journey!
