Egg tempera is an ancient, craft-based painting technique that, once cured, is highly permanent retaining its color clarity and luminosity for hundreds of years. The support is marine-grade Baltic birch plywood with a raw linen covering. It is primed with several layers of traditional gesso (the finest French chalk and hide glue). All of the pigments used to create this painting were ground by hand then “tempered” with the yolk of an egg from a country, free-range hen.

Usage/Care Notes:
Many egg tempera artists frame their completed art work behind glass. I choose not to for the following reasons: I want the viewer to fully see the object ness of the panel, I want the surface sheen and the details of the paint handling to be seen, I want to avoid trapping any moisture that could potentially harm the art. However, not only are objects subject to dust, egg tempera panels can be scratched, even when protected by a final varnish (which I do apply). If a collector wishes to place picture glass in the shadow box frame provided, they can remove the matted artwork, remove the spacer that sets the artwork back into the frame, set in picture glass, set back in the spacer and then set the artwork back in. If left unglazed, and dust settles on top of the panel, one can do the following: using a very soft and clean cloth, gently run it over the top of the panel. Do not use excessive pressure, go carefully and gently. If dust is evident on the surface of the artwork, one can do the following: Lay the framed artwork flat. Take a very soft, clean cloth and gently drag it over the surface. Do not apply excess pressure, go carefully and gently. If dust is on the mat or inside the frame, one can do the following: use a hairdryer set low, and on cold, and blow particulates off these surfaces.
