Artist Name: John Monk

Artist Bio: My fascination with sheet metal began early. In the 1960’s my father collected antique tinsmithing tools. By the time I was 16 I was making the occasional sconce or lantern using his tools. When my father passed his tools on to me, I set up a shop at home and, for several years, did quite a bit of tinsmithing. During that time, I was able to volunteer at the Ohio Historical Society Ohio Village tin shop and learned from with one of the best tinsmiths in the country, crafting utilitarian items such as sconces, lanterns, and tea pots.

In 2010 I took a class at John C. Campbell Folk School on Copperware in the Arts and Crafts Tradition from Roycroft Master Craftsman and frequent JCCFS instructor Robert Trout. This re-invigorated my desire to create and expanded my vision from the utilitarian nature of tinware to the artistic flair of Arts and Craft copperware.

Since that time, I have continued to study and create, producing traditional and original copperware. Many of the pieces I do, such as the Shaker Style Copper Boxes, are of my own design. They blend the Shaker and Arts and Crafts aesthetics in a single utilitarian but decorative piece.
In 2019 I taught my first class on Shaker Style Copper Boxes at JCCFS. In 2020 I was juried into the Roycrofters at Large Association as an Artisan.

My fascination with copper as a medium and Arts and Crafts forms as an expression in that medium continues. My work can be seed on my web site – www.luminesque.com, or on my Facebook page – www.facebook.com/luminesque.

Usage/Care Notes: This piece is laquered and can be dusted or polished with a microcrystaline way. It should never be cleaned with abrasives or copper cleaners as they will remove the patina.
