Maintenance Technician

Position Summary

The Maintenance Technician performs day-to-day maintenance related operations and assumes responsibility for the maintenance of physical assets on campus. This position requires attention to detail, a high level of craftsmanship, and the ability to work both autonomously and cooperatively in a team setting. Facility related duties include carpentry, cabinetry, interior and exterior painting, sheetrock repair and general repairs as needed.  Other related tasks include repairs to plumbing, electrical, systems repairs, and assistance with emergencies. This position reports to the Buildings and Grounds Director and is a full-time, benefits eligible, up to 40 hrs/wk, nonexempt hourly position. Must be available to work weekends, holidays, and on a rotational on-call schedule.

 

Position Responsibilities

  • Completes facility maintenance tasks and work orders as assigned by the Buildings and Grounds Director, including but not limited to electrical, plumbing, addressing safety concerns, and meeting the needs of Folk School facility stakeholders.
  • Coordinates with local contractors and specialists to ensure that any routine/major repairs or services performed on the JCCFS fleet of vehicles and equipment are done correctly and in a timely manner.
  • Completes maintenance tasks including but not limited to carpentry and woodworking projects; interior and exterior painting, HVAC, and appliance repair and troubleshooting.
  • Assists in maintaining roads, driveways, parking areas, and walkways. Ensures handicapped accessibility of houses and studios.
  • Completes/checks maintenance e-mails, tracks work orders and orders supplies.
  • Assists with the daily maintenance and monitoring of the campus water system.
  • Recognizes unsafe conditions on campus and takes corrective action.
  • Ensures a safe environment for staff, work study students and clients by adhering to safety and health regulations.
  • The employee will occasionally be required to work a Saturday shift when weekend classes are scheduled. Saturday shifts are on a rotational basis amongst the maintenance department.  Time off is offered during the week to accommodate this requirement.
  • Maintains organization of tools and equipment in the maintenance shop.
  • Answer questions from visitors and others in a friendly and factual manner.
  • Assists in the setup and execution of special events such as Fall Festival, Friends and Family Day, May Pole Dance and Easter.

 

Education and Experience Requirements

  • An Associate’s Degree, or High School Diploma with four years of relevant work experience are preferred. Field experience may be substituted for formal education.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.
  • Possesses a working knowledge of maintenance related tools.
  • Proficient in basic computer skills such as, sending/receiving e-mails and on-line ordering of maintenance parts.
  • Experience with the operation of tractors, backhoe and skid steer are preferred.

  • Comfortable working in a fast paced, environment where tasks can change from day to day, depending on circumstances.
  • Strong inter-personal skills when communicating with others is a must.
  • Ability to learn work order tracking system.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to complete mathematical calculations, including plus, minus, division, and percentages.
  • Must be self-motivated, have the ability to manage a varied workload and be able to assess needs, set priorities and solve problems.
  • Possess ability to work well within a group and maintain crew motivation and productivity.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and dedication to the mission of the Folk School are essential.
  • Excellent communication and relationship building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate, and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to interact effectively and appropriately with supervisor, team members, other JCCFS staff, and external contractors or partners.
  • The ability to tolerate all weather conditions—heat, cold, rain, and working outdoors.
  • The ability to safely operate a tractor once trained and adhere to the standards of safe vehicle operation.
  • Comprehensive understanding of electrical, plumbing and structural regulations to effect and oversee permanent repairs to historic buildings.

 

Physical Demands

The position requires that the employee be in good physical condition. The employee must be able to work on his/her feet for a period of eight hours a day, lift up to 80 pounds, be prepared to work in inclement weather conditions and handle hazardous materials appropriately.  The employee must be physically capable of operating handheld and power tools in a repetitive and sustained manner.  Additionally, the employee must be able to occasionally work at a computer. The position requires that the employee be able to walk unaided up and down hills and over uneven terrain, bend, stoop, and have use of fine and gross motor skills. This position requires limited travel and the ability to drive a car. A current driver’s license is required. The position requires that the employee be able to climb ladders and occasionally work in high places. The work of this position frequently requires the use of hands to handle, or touch objects, tools, or controls. Must be able to work weekends and holidays, as needed. This position requires fluency in English.

 

Pay & Benefits
