Position Summary: The 2D Coordinator is responsible for program development and innovation in assigned program areas, coordination of relevant studios, instructor communications, training, and support, managing the budget for relevant program areas, and working collaboratively across departments to promote and strengthen programs. The 2D Coordinator will represent the organization to local, regional, and national audiences including instructors, assistants, students, and donors and will develop new constituents through continued service and outreach. They coordinate special programs and events related to their studios and program areas. The 2D Coordinator reports to the Programs Director for program development and to the Studio Manager for studio operations. This is a 32-40 hour per week, non-exempt hourly, and benefits eligible position. This position requires working on weekends and some evenings.
Position Responsibilities
- Directly responsible for developing balanced and varied programming for assigned program areas, including schedule planning of anywhere from 50-200 classes per year, analysis of programming statistics, instructor hiring, course development, and development of special programs.
- Work collaboratively with Program managers to set annual program goals.
- Work with the Programs Development Manager and instructors on the development of all class-related content. Edit any relevant class material for accuracy and consistency and ensure that all public-facing information is correct.
- Respond to enquiries from potential new instructors and process applications. Manage instructor communications and serve as their primary point of contact for studio needs. Attend to instructors’ needs by communicating in advance of classes to order all materials and set up studio spaces as needed by instructors. Welcome instructors when they arrive on campus and train new ones.
- Monitor enrollment trends, instructor and student evaluations, and address any conflicts or concerns that may arise regarding class content and student/instructor experience. Assess current program offerings.
- Work closely with the Studio Manager to plan annual and long-term studio improvements, create, maintain and manage equipment maintenance systems, studio materials, studio safety procedures and training protocol for instructors and students. Create equipment lists for publication and internal use. Work collaboratively with the Studio Manager and Buildings and Grounds Director to implement facilities improvements and repairs in studios.
- Work closely with the Studio Manager and the Finance Department to develop and manage the studio operating and capital budgets, manage restricted funds, handle all financial paperwork and manage relevant vendor accounts.
- Manage weekly cleaning and flipping of the studio between classes and give safety orientations on the first day, particularly on Sunday evenings.
- Maintain a visible and welcoming presence in the studio to set the tone for a successful and positive Folk School experience.
- Work collaboratively with Programs staff to contribute to creative program development. Attend team meetings and give updates on studio advances as well as contributing ideas to help achieve overall team goals.
- Fill in for other Coordinators as needed and contribute to overall program operational needs. Be on-call when needed for studio operations and office support. Attend to all studio needs as they arise throughout classes. Provide occasional support for other Programs staff for scheduled and unscheduled PTO absences and weekend coverage.
- Communicate as needed with the operations team in support of other studios, to manage shared equipment, and complete end-of-year duties including inventory and maintenance.
- Work collaboratively with the Marketing Department to promote programs, low enrollment classes, identify networking opportunities, reach target markets, and develop annual promotional goals.
- Work across departments as needed to support organizational needs including coordinating needs from and for other departments.
- Coordinate special programs and events related to assigned studios and program areas, including volunteer work weeks, demonstrations, and hands-on activities for the public.
- Help assess and process studio donations.
- Work closely with the Programs team to help reach the goals of the strategic plan and further the Folk School’s mission, vision, and values.
Education/Experience
- BA degree in Craft Studies, Decorative Arts, Art History, Material Culture, or another related field is preferred.
- In-depth knowledge and understanding of maintaining a fully equipped studio and all associated equipment and tools.
- An understanding of the materials and techniques of relevant fields to be able to offer balanced and creative programming.
- Established connections within associated fields and the ability to recruit instructors from new and diverse avenues is preferred.
- Solid understanding of the Folk School concept and a desire to engage and promote this educational model.
Skills/Abilities
- Ability to effectively manage a varied workload, plan and manage a budget and successfully organize long-term planning and projects.
- Ability to work collaboratively, support other team members, and develop and maintain relationships with Folk School staff, instructors, students, and community.
- Excellent communication skills and attention to detail.
- Strong administrative skills, including experience working in Microsoft software and Excel.
Pay & Benefits
The pay for this position is approximately $24.00 per hour. The Folk School offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health, dental, and vision insurance; two tuition-free classes per year; free lunch options; and generous paid time off.
Physical Demands:
This position requires travel and the ability to drive a car. A current driver’s license is required. The position requires that the employee be able to walk unaided up and down hills and over uneven terrain, bend, stoop, and have use of fine and gross motor skills. The work of this position frequently requires the use of hands to handle or touch objects, tools, or controls. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move heavy objects or boxes, up to 40 pounds. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will likely need to sit and to work at a computer. Must be able to work evenings, weekends and holidays, as needed. This position requires fluency in English.
