General Information & Policies
How Early Should I Register?
Early! Our classes are small and many fill quickly, so we recommend you register as soon as possible to get your class of choice- six months in advance is not too early! You can register to be on the wait list for any class that is full. Cancellations do happen, and you may be able to get into a class at the last minute, so don't hesitate to call to check on availability.
Registration & Deposit
Students may only register for one class for each weeklong or weekend session. A deposit per person of $150 for each week or $100 for each weekend ($250 for week + weekend classes) must accompany each registration. 50% of the deposit is non-refundable (see below). Registrations are non-transferable. Full payment of your balance is due 30 days prior to class or at the time of initial registration.
A fee will be charged for returned checks.
Classes without a minimum number of registrations may be cancelled. (See "course cancellations" for details.)
Student Withdrawal/ Cancellations

Because of registration costs and other services, including faculty contracts, material acquisitions, and housing arrangements, the Folk School is required to charge cancellation fees to students who change their itineraries.
Please note:
Once students are accepted into a class, cancellation fees apply, regardless of the reason for canceling.
Cancellation of enrollment more than 30 days prior to the first day of class results in a cancellation fee of 50% of the deposit.
Cancellation of enrollment within 30 days of the first day of class results in a cancellation fee of 100% of the deposit.
No tuition, deposit, housing or meals refunds will be made after the start date of a class.
Registrations are not transferable.
Students who cancel their enrollment in a class to transfer to another class are charged the cancellation fee, plus the deposit for the class to which they wish to transfer.

Local student cancellation/transfer policy:
A $25 fee will be charged for any change in registration for local students on standby status. Once confirmed for a class, the regular cancellation fee applies.

Tuition does not include costs for lodging and meals or class materials fees.
Local Tuition
Full-time residents of the counties listed below are eligible for a 50% discount for any regular course on a space-available, stand-by basis. Students will know if space is available one week prior to the starting date of the class.
The discount is offered to:
Cherokee, Clay, Macon, Swain, and Graham counties in NC; Union, Towns, and Fannin counties in GA; and Polk County in TN.
Applicants must present a valid driver's license or voter registration card showing local address. The discount does not apply to the cost of materials for a class. Locals may choose to pay full tuition for a confirmed space.
Housing & Meals
Costs for housing and meals are not included in tuition costs.

On-campus housing is provided in a variety of buildings. Housing options include: dormitory-style rooms with several twin beds and a bath in the room; rooms with twin beds and a bath accessible from the hallway; and rooms with twin beds and a bath in the room. A few double beds are available.

All Folk School housing (and studios) are air-conditioned, except for the Blacksmith Shop (the meeting room in the Shop has A/C.)

Room assignments are made at the discretion of the Registrar. If you have special needs, please make them clear when pre-registering.

One set of linens (sheets, pillowcase, blanket, towel and washcloth) is provided per person.

Most housing facilities are handicapped accessible. Individuals with mobility restrictions should contact the Registrar to discuss housing and access to studios and other facilities.

The Folk School's campground is open year-round and offers 12 RV/camper sites (max. 34 feet) and 6 tent sites. Water and septic hookups are available and a bath house with toilets and showers is located onsite.

The cost of all meals is combined with lodging costs for students staying on campus (except for the campground).

Three delicious meals are served each day in our Dining Hall:

Breakfast: 8:15am
Lunch: 12:15pm
Dinner: 6:00pm

A vegetarian meal option is always available. Special menus (low salt, low fat, etc.) are available if arranged for in advance. Please contact the Registar if you have special dietary needs.

Individual meals may be purchased by students staying in the campground or off campus. When you register, please let the Registrar know if you'd like to reserve certain meals.
Materials Fees & Supplies

Students in craft courses typically use materials in the making of their projects, and in non-craft classes there are often additional fees for copies and such. Materials fees can range from $0 to over $300. Because the amount of materials used will vary by student, materials fees are not included in the tuition amount. Classes with estimated materials fees in excess of $100 are noted in its class description. Upon registering for a class, you will receive an estimate of materials fees on your Folk School invoice, along with a list of additional supplies the instructor may require you to bring from home. Payment for materials purchased from the instructor or the school is required on the last day of class. While the Folk School accepts credit cards, many instructors do not, so please be prepared to pay for materials fees to instructors with cash or a check.
Classes with material fees of $100 or more are noted in italics in the class description sections of the course catalog and on the website.
Course Cancellations
The Folk School will conduct courses for which a minimum number of students are registered. If the Folk School must cancel a course, registered students will be given the opportunity to enroll in another course, with no transfer penalty. A full refund will be given to students who do not wish to transfer.
If you plan to fly, please confirm that your class has sufficient enrollment to run prior to booking your ticket. The Folk School is not responsible for nonrefundable airline tickets in any circumstance.
Guest Fees
Guests accompanying students and staying on campus, but not taking a class, are charged regular housing and meal rates as well as a guest fee of $75 for weeklong visits or $30 for weekends visits.
Age Requirements
Students must be at least 18 years of age (21 for some cooking classes, as noted in descriptions). No one under 18 may take a class or stay on campus without approval. Exceptions are Little/Middle Folk School and Intergenerational Week, which are designed especially for young people.
The Folk School's terrain is hilly and uneven. All public facilities at the Folk School have handicapped-accessible entrances and restrooms. Studios and a number of housing facilities are handicapped accessible. If you have mobility restrictions, please contact us to discuss housing and access to studios and other facilities.

Drugs, Alcohol, and Firearms
Alcohol is not permitted in studios or public areas. The use of illegal drugs is prohibited. Firearms are not permitted on campus.
Smoking is not allowed inside any building at the Folk School. There are no indoor smoking facilities.
Studio Safety
The Folk School is not responsible for injuries sustained as a result of improper or careless use of studio tools or equipment.
Cell Phone Usage
Cell service is sporadic on campus, but if you have a signal, we ask that conversations take place in private.
No cell phone use in studios during class, at the Dining Hall, or at other group gatherings.
Personal Property
The Folk School is not responsible for the security of property belonging to students and instructors.
Students and instructors are not permitted to have pets on the Folk School property, unless they are staying in the campground. Service animals are an exception.
Dog Policy for Folk School Campground
With advance permission of the Folk School, students staying ONLY in the campground may bring their well-behaved dog(s). Dogs are not allowed in any buildings on the Folk School campus. All dogs must be on a leash (maximum length 6 feet) at all times. All dog waste must be picked up immediately.
Dogs cannot be left unattended in the campground, except inside an air-controlled RV while students are in class. Allowing your dog(s) to bark uncontrollably will not be permitted. We ask you to have documentation of current rabies vaccinations. If at any point your dog(s) becomes aggressive, we reserve the right to ask you to leave the campground without a refund.
Wi-Fi Usage
Wi-Fi is available in most common areas and studios.
Unacceptable Behavior
The Folk School reserves the right to dismiss
any student, without refund, for behavior that is disruptive to the
community living and learning environment and to refuse future
registrations from such student.
