Old-time mountain square dances were once common throughout the Appalachian region, where dances took place in homes, barns, and rural community centers to the sounds of fiddle, banjo, and guitar. These old-time community dances are hard to find nowadays, along with many of the great Southern Appalachian dance figures such as "Four Leaf Clover," "Georgia Rang-Tang," and the "Grapevine Twist." Come join us for a fun-filled weekend of dancing to great, live southern old-time music. We'll sample regional dances from North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Virginia, and West Virginia. Also learn about the history and development of these dance traditions through videos and discussions. Come prepared for plenty of dancing, a wealth of knowledge, and good fellowship. No prior dancing experience necessary. Singles and couples are welcome.
