Dear Folk School Family,
After careful consideration and with utmost concern for the safety of staff, students, instructors, and community, we are revising our 2021 program schedule. Instead of resuming our regularly scheduled classes on January 3, we have decided to begin on May 2. We continue to follow the Centers for Disease Control and public health professionals' guidelines. With the current and expected continuation of the national surge of COVID-19 cases and oncoming cooler weather, we believe this is the best decision for everyone's health and safety.
This week our registration staff will begin contacting students enrolled in January through April classes to discuss refund and rescheduling options. To contact our Registration department, please call 1-800-365-5724, ext. 1. If you are an instructor and have questions about your class, call the Programs department, ext. 2.
We're looking forward to having our Folk School family here with us in Brasstown next year! Even though our class sizes will be smaller, and we'll implement health and safety precautions such as mask-wearing and physical distancing, we believe your Folk School experience will be as magical as ever. It's not too early to begin planning your next visit to the Folk School. You can view May-June 2021 classes on our website and eCatalog. The new Folk School catalog will arrive in your mailbox in January, chock full of classes through December 2021.
Although we have not been able to offer our regular programs since March, we're discovering new ways to provide safe learning experiences, both in-person and virtually. Earlier this summer, we created a garden and nature-inspired workshop series, featuring topics such as composting, birding, and broom making. Over a hundred local students attended the three-hour outdoor workshops, many for the first time.
Currently, we're in the second session of our grant-funded Traditional Craft Mentorship program. Nine emerging artists are here studying with master artisans in blacksmithing, woodworking, and fiber arts. During our first session in October, mentees focused on weaving, music and dance, and basketry. We've enjoyed connecting with old and new friends through our Virtual Events, and we appreciate our Folk School instructors for sharing their time and talents in these live hour-long presentations on craft, music, and dance. Attendee Diane Barrett recently expressed her gratitude, "How wonderful that you have found a way to enrich our creative lives right in our own homes during the pandemic."

Like many nonprofits and businesses, the Folk School has suffered financial losses because of COVID-19. To fully recover, we are relying on your continued financial support and attendance in classes. Pandemic-Related Class Cancellation Refund Policy, updated Nov 2, 2020.
While classes and events are currently suspended because of the Covid-19 pandemic, our board of directors and staff continue to work toward reconnecting with our Folk School family on campus once it is considered safe and appropriate to do so.
We have made the decision to cancel classes through April 30, 2021. If you are registered for an upcoming class you have four options regarding your refund, namely:
1. Gift Certificate: You can elect to receive a gift certificate for the full amount you have paid. The certificate can be used within the next three years for future classes or purchases in our Craft Shop. Choosing this option helps the Folk School remain strong and ready to eventually resume classes and events.
2. Donate to the Folk School: As a show of support for the Folk School, you may choose to donate all or part of what would be refunded for your canceled class. If you are able, please consider offering aid to the school in this way.
3. Refund: All requested cash refunds will be processed within 30 days from the date of your refund request.
4. Transfer to a future class. May-June 2021 classes are currently posted on our website.
July-December classes will be posted on our website in January, along with the release of our new catalog.

Frequently Asked Questions Regarding Folk School Classes and Events During the Pandemic
How long will my refund take?
All refunds will be processed within 30 days of the refund request.
When will 2021 classes be available for registration?
May - June 2021 classes are now online. July - December 2021 classes will be posted online in January. A printed catalog will also be mailed to students in January. To request a catalog, sign up on our website on the home page under "Request A Catalog."
What if I need to cancel due to COVID?
To prioritize the safety of our campus and community, we have revised our cancellation policy to provide flexibility for COVID related cancellations. For any student with a positive diagnosis, symptoms, or exposure to COVID-19 within two weeks of a class starting we have waived the cancellation fee and can issue a full refund up to the day a class begins. Students should contact the Registrar immediately so we can process a refund.
What if I miss class time as a result of COVID?
In the case of missed class time because someone experiences a positive COVID test or the Folk School suspends or cancels a class, the amount of missed class time will be pro-rated as credit towards a future class. Once a class begins, there will be no refunds or credits for early departure, late arrival, or missed class for any other reason.
What determines whether or not the Folk School will cancel classes in the future?
The Folk School staff and board of directors are making decisions based on state and federal guidelines; the health and safety needs of our students, staff, and community; and necessary logistics for resuming operations.
Can I visit the campus even if you're not having classes?
All of our facilities are currently closed to the public, but you are welcome to walk the nature trails on campus. We ask that you wear a mask if you are within six feet of other visitors and staff. Current North Carolina guidelines require wearing a mask in public places.
Is the Craft Shop open?
After careful consideration and with utmost concern for the safety of staff and community, the Craft Shop has suspend in-person shopping effective 12/10/20.
As a safe alternative to in-person shopping, the Craft Shop will continue to fulfill phone orders and provide gifts and handmade items through our new Craft Shop Online.
